The Conquest of Everest

Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary

My second post for the Alex Grant Explorers Society covers the first two gentlemen to conquer Mt Everest: Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. We have all seen the pictures of the two of them ascending the highest mountain on earth but you might not have known that they took a movie camera along for the expedition.

And here are some outerwear suggestions when you're ready to do a little exploring on your own:

  1. Thanks for putting this on your site. I love the footage and never knew it existed. I always wondered what it would be like to live at a time when there were still mountains to conquer and the technology they used seemed understandable. There was no gortex or sattelite navigation; just waxed cotton, wool and radio waves. Everthing just seemed so - authentic. Love your explorer's club, keep up the good work!

  2. Thanks for sharing Skip! I loved seeing the clothes the people wore in the early part of the movie. Very stylish group of people. This expedition always amazed me. I never knew it took so many people to make the climb successful.
Did you know that Kenzig did not know how to operate a camera at the summit, so tjats why there is no picture of Sir Edmond Hillary at the top of Everest. He took thr picture of Kenzig. The last forty feet of the climb is called The Hillary Step.
