Found: Mexican Coca-Cola

As a home owner, I find myself at Home Depot more than I care to mention but my last few trips have been well worth it because I recently discovered that they sell Mexican Coca-Cola. Now, you might be wondering, "Is there a real difference between Mexican Coke and U.S. Coke?" The answer is a resounding "Yes."

I already knew that Mexican Coke was made from cane sugar as opposed to high-fructose corn syrup in U.S. Coke but I was skeptical about the difference in taste.

As a kid, I remember visiting the Coca Cola Factory in Atlanta, GA and tasting different Cokes from around the world. They all had a distinct taste but I clearly remember preferring U.S. Coke over the rest.  I guess they didn't have Mexican Coke at that time because it's much sweeter and has less of a "chemical" taste than U.S. Coke or any other cola for that matter.

Verdict: Pay a little extra for the Mexican Coke. It's so much better, goes down much smoother and gives you a reason to pull out that bottle opener you've been carrying around on your swiss army knife.

  1. Alex, you support US made clothing and crafts. Why go with Mexican Coke. Buy American.

    1. This buy American thing is seriously getting ridiculous. I mean, Coke is an international company. Whether you buy American or buy Mexican coke only supports Americans on the margins.

And really - who cares if we support an American corn company (which is what this boils down to anyway, since it's about corn syrup). Are those the kind of jobs we want to exist in America? Wouldn't it be better if the government retrained those people for higher skilled jobs, and then imported the corn from somewhere else? Or, better yet, not subsidize corn, which in turn leads to obesity in our children? Are we supposed to buy American made Coke even though it's clearly less healthy for us? Just because someone in Nebraska needs an extra dollar? How about we create better industries in those regions?

Supporting American interests and jobs is a lot more complicated than "buy American." If it were that simple, economic policy and development wouldn't be such complicated issues.

    2. Personally I'm against Communism. But if you are for it, well, I guess that's what we mean by free speech.

  2. Lets find a better more economical use for corn than souring our coke

  3. There is something magical about any Mexican soda. They use of course the real sugar, but the flavors seem just a little "brighter."
I'm in Texas, so finding Mexican Coke is not a big deal, it is carried in most grocery stores down here.

  4. Here in Napa, Ca, we cant keep Mexican Coke on the shelf. There's just something about drinking a soda from a glass bottle that can make a bad day so much better! Pairs well with taco truck tacos or a big greasy cheeseburger!

  6. I don't know why the US insists on sweetening with high fructose corn syrup. Damn right Mexican coke tastes like the Coke I remember when I was a child.

  7. Depending on how old you are, and I have a feeling you're about my age (just north of 40), you wouldn't have tasted a difference between US vs. Mexican Coke. Coke made the switch to corn syrup in the early 80's - pre-"New" Coke disaster. And Scooter Shooter? Corn Lobby, my man, Corn Lobby. It's why that stuff is in your gas tank, too.

    Skip - love the page.

  10. Mexican Coke does taste better! World of Coke in Atlanta is just a museum, not affiliated with any factory or anything, though.
