Every Man Should Own: Maxminimus

The "Perfect" Sweater

Every man should have…every man should own… a go-to, bulletproof, memory laden sweater. You know… the one that if the house was on fire, you’d take it. Shetland, cashmere, cotton…whatever.

Mine just happens to be a navy blue (now actually; a patinated, lighter shade of navy) cotton boatneck, courtesy of Ralph. No logo. Waistband and sleeve cuff snugness as firm as the day I bought it—thirty, I kid you not, years ago. I’m glad it can’t talk.

  1. Mine's an ancient Patagonia Synchilla. I wear that thing constantly. I had thought that my affection for it was a singular phenomenon until I read this.

  2. Brooks Bros dark grey wool crew neck for me...

  3. Women choose these things in part based on whether a man has ever told them, "That sweater makes your eyes look so blue."

  4. 27 year old heavy wool Gap sweater (when they made gear of substance): Ragg wool, dark brown and dotted with minute rainbow flecks of color. Wears with everything casual. Many many years good times....

  5. Mine would be a beige tennis sweater from J. Crew. It has blue around the v neck for the classic look. It looks like something an actor would have worn in a vintage Hollywood publicity photo.

  6. My favorite sweater is full of memories. In fact, the D.A. was also convinced of this which is why it is impounded as evidence at the local precinct.

  7. This is excellent, in part because of the comments, they are excellent. (I'm with LPC on why some of us hold on to things any rational person would have long ago donated to Goodwill.)

    Have a splendid week!

  8. Have an amazing thin, grey Ralph Lauren cashmere v-neck from 1989. I've worn the elbows off it, but otherwise it's as good as new without a single sign of pilling. Wish they still made them like that....

  9. Mine is a navy blue cotton crew neck from LL Bean that I bought as a freshman in college. At the time I bought a green one and a red one followed shortly thereafter, but, as a testatment to "Old Blue's" reliability, I couldn't tell you where the other two are. Much like everyone else it's my go to and I love it.
